What We Stand For
Grounds for Change (GFC) is a volunteer and student-run coffeehouse on the campus of Allegheny College. This organization and space will provide an alternative location on campus for socializing, studying, intellectual discussion & debate, community & campus events, and will provide an alcohol-free atmosphere. GFC will strive to support environmentally sustainable practices, including purchasing recycled materials, as well as products that are organic, fair trade, and locally grown or produced. GFC is a not-for-profit organization and all proceeds go towards the upkeep and improvement of the space, or towards events for the student body.
Care.
Why our Sustainability Initiatives Rock!
Grounds for Change upholds it’s own commitment to sustainability, as well as the Allegheny Student Government’s commitment to sustainability. Our day to day practices include supporting locally owned businesses by purchasing locally roasted fair trade coffee, dairy, baked goods, and cocoas from Edinboro, Pittsburgh, Meadville, and Cleveland. We also adopt a “no disposable” policy by not providing disposable to-go cups and using metal tea steepers along with compostable tea bags to minimize waste. Plus, all of our coffee grounds and filters are composted regularly along with other campus waste. In addition to our purchasable goods, we try to acquire all of our furniture, mugs, decorations, and blankets from secondhand sources such as thrifts stores, donations, and the college’s art reserves. We are always looking for new ways to be more sustainable, and always welcome any suggestions!
